Okay, yeah there's nothing special about this, it's just your standard CMO but your only choices are Dangans. I wanted to have some fun with it, execute me why don't you. ANYHOO, just put the character you want in the subject line and let's have some fun! Please don't feel like you're limited to dangans just because they're the only characters I feel like playing right now, as always I love me some cross canon interactions. [New NEW Aspen? Really? The creativity here is mind-boggling. he finally looks down from the tree, with a somewhat uncertain expression. Like he's not entirely sure what to make of all this information or what to say to it. Not that it isn't all very interesting! It is. Good background information.]

[Kaede giggles a little. She can understand his hesitation; when she'd first arrived here, everything had seemed completely absurd. Even now, she can still run across things that seem like they're right out of a fantasy opera or fairytale storybook, but they're real life.]

Come on, let's go see if we can find Bread. He's in charge of the town guard, after all, so we should definitely say hi! Oh, here-

[She shrugs off her BIAS pack and roots around for a moment before pulling out a small banana-scented bag filled with... cat treats?]

Hang onto these, okay?

[He takes the bag, looking a little confused as he peeks inside it. Cat treats? Could this Bread person actually be--?]

Okay.

[No problem, he can definitely hang onto a bag of cat treats.]

...is there a reason this bag smells like bananas?

Bread loves bananas!

[That's the only explanation he's getting. She is not going to explain the cat treats, because she wants Shuichi to see for himself.

Without waiting for an answer, she takes off at an almost-skip to enter the town. It's mid-morning; a man delivering milk tips his hat to her, and Kaede gives him a bright smile and a wave in return. She exchanges polite hellos with each person they pass by, but doesn't stop for very long. She has got to surprise Shuichi with Bread!

--Or, maybe Bread can surprise them. A few houses down, the sound of a yodeling yowl pierces the air. The townspeople don't seem fazed at all as a bear-sized, armor-wearing tabby cat suddenly becomes visible, bounding across rooftops and beelining straight for the two Reclaimers.]

[Shuichi, on the other hand, is definitely fazed by the yodeling. He jumps a little, nearly dropping the bag of treats as he looks around for the source of the sound that is much, much too loud to have been produced by a normal cat.]

I-is that--?!

[Okay, he had a feeling Bread was a cat, even though the idea of a cat being the head of a guard made about zero sense, but it would have been nice to know ahead of time that the tree wasn't the ONLY giant thing in New New Aspen!]

Whoa!!

[Even Kaede wasn't expecting him to dash across the rooftops, but she's laughing, too, peeking over at Shuichi.

Bread, meanwhile, pauses at the edge of the rooftop, stretches his paws down the wall, then jumps to the ground in front of them. He butts his head familiarly against Kaede's shoulder and nearly knocks her over, sparking another laugh that's almost drowned out by the sound of him purring.]

This is Saihara-kun, Bread... [she manages through giggles, burying her fingers in his soft fur.] He brought treats for you!

[If a cat's eyes can light up, that's what Bread's do. He'd assumed Kaede had brought him the treats, as she usually does, but if the other human has them...]

Are you going to cause any trouble in Mayor Hollyweather's town?

[Oh, yeah. This bear-sized cat also speaks Common, and is looking Shuichi right in the eye.]

[THANKS FOR THE HEADS UP THERE, KAEDE. HE REALLY APPRECIATES THE FOREWARNING THAT THE CAT TALKS. That said, he nearly drops the bag of cat treats all over again in surprise, eyes widening and body going completely rigid in fear and surprise. He shakes his head, though his eyes remain locked on Bread's. He seems unable to pull his gaze away.]

N-N...No!

[He doesn't have a single trouble-causing bone in his body.]

Mmmnnngghhh... Bread, be nice! [Kaede chides with a pout, digging her fingers in a little against his fur. Not that Bread would actually listen to her. He might be a very smart cat, and he may be a talking cat, but he is still a cat.

He stares back at Shuichi, unblinking, his tail slowly flicking back and forth. He tends to be very wary of strangers, but Kaede is a friend, and this boy does smell like bananas...

Abruptly he noses into Shuichi's palm in search of the bag. Open it! Give him a treat!!]

Well. That's alright, then.

[Shuichi's hands hands are shaking, so he fumbles the bag a bit as he tries to open it. But he manages it after a few moments, only to hesitate all over again as he tries to figure out the best way to give the cat a treat. He's so big, he could probably bite Shuichi's whole hand off, if he's not careful. Or at the very least, a few fingers!]

[In the end, he pours three treats into his palm and holds it out flat towards the cat. His fingers are definitely probably safer this way, since he's keeping them nice and flat. Though he's still watching the treats warily, seemingly holding his breath as he waits for the cat to eat.]

It's okay, Saihara-kun, don't be scared! Bread is the best guard-cat in New New Aspen, isn't he...? Yes he is!

[Kaede strokes her fingers through the ruff of fur peeking out over the top of Bread's armor, giving Shuichi her best encouraging smile. That's it! Bribe him into submission!

Bread sniffs the treats, noses them around a moment in Shuichi's hand -- then opens his mouth and licks them up, purring as he does so. Friendship accepted? With those three treats vacuumed up, he nuzzles his nose into Shuichi's open hand, then starts sniffing for the other one. He knows there are more treats. Surrender them to the town watch!]

All the cats were normal-sized before Mayor Henrik used the Relic, [Kaede explains, wrapping her arms around Bread's neck and standing on tip-toe to rest her chin against his fur.] Now he's just... bigger and better at guarding, right, Bread?

[The purring gets louder. Yes, that's right. Praise him more!]

[He pulls the bag open again and fishes out a few more treats, offering them to Bread on his palm again. He is trying not to be scared! He does seem like a nice enough cat, he's just...kind of intimidating. Maybe it's the battle armor.]

S-so...is it just the cats then? Or...are all the animals in New New Aspen big now?

[All the people were normal sized, though...he's definitely a little confused about that exactly happened here.]

[Bread sniffs the treats once again before all but inhaling them. He's certain this human boy must be a good boy; he has so many delicious treats!]

It's mostly the cats here in town... I'm pretty sure the shadow vultures still hang out in the tree.

[Kaede finds a spot behind Bread's ear to scratch, and the big cat abandons Shuichi's hand to instead nuzzle his head closer to her hand.]

...And of course, there's Laurel-san and the giant spiders... [She sounds a little hesitant to bring them up. She's obviously choosing her words very carefully.] They're nice enough now, but... when we first arrived in New Aspen, you know, up in the tree, they were pretty awful to us. It wasn't really their fault, but...

[But they are still giant spiders.]

[Shuichi pales slightly. Giant...spiders... Gross. At least she gave him forewarning about those. He's pretty sure he would have at least screamed, if not fainted, had he encountered him without a head's up.]

[He's kind of curious why it's JUST the cats (and spiders, apparently) but the way she trails off is more concerning.]

But...?

Well, there was some bad history between Laurel-san and the old mayor. That's why they were fighting so much before.

But that's all water under the bridge now! Besides, we don't have to really talk to any of the spiders today, anyway.

[This is all a gross oversimplification, but does he really expect anything less from Kaede "well, I've always been told I'm carefree!" Akamatsu?

She gives Bread one more scratch behind his ears before drawing back, clasping her hands behind her back with a smile.]

Are we free to go, mighty guard captain Bread? Oh, or maybe you can give us a ride? We're going to see Barnaby-san about his music collection!

[Bread seems to be thinking it over. In the meantime, he bonks his head into the center of Shuichi's chest. He doesn't have to say it aloud, his intent is obvious. Pet him, human boy!]
